Saturday:

BAKERSFIELD, Calif. – Top Alcohol Funny Car driver Sean Bellemeur of Newport Beach, Calif., increased his points lead at the final NHRA Pacific division Lucas Oil Drag Racing Series event of the year.  Competing at this weekend's event at Auto Club Famoso Raceway, Bellemeur scored his fourth win of the season while Top Alcohol Dragster driver Cody Perkins of Bluffdale, Utah, earned his first win of the year.

Bellemeur, who qualified in the No. 4 spot, got the win over Brett Williamson, Campbell, Calif.  Bellemeur consistently made 5.7-second runs throughout the event and in the final he ran 5.750 seconds at 251.53 mph to beat Williamson who slowed to a 16.397-second pass.

Perkins had qualified in the seventh spot and scored an upset win over Jim Whiteley of Grand Junction, Colo., in the first round.  In the final he squared off against reigning division champion Chris Demke, Sunland, Calif.  Demke made the quicker run, 5.424 seconds at 265.33 mph to 5.461 seconds at 261.70 mph, but Perkins got off the line first to get win on a hole shot.

"Upset" was the word of the day in the first round of eliminations in both Alcohol categories as the top qualifiers in both classes went out.  In Top Alcohol Dragster it was Mark Niver, Scottsdale, Ariz., who fell to eighth-place qualifier Joey Severance of Spanaway, Wash.  Von Smith, Oak Ridge, Tenn., the best qualifier in Top Alcohol Funny Car, lost on a hole shot to Russ Parker of Salem, Ore.

Dean Carter, Glendale, Ariz., earned his second straight Pacific division win in Comp Eliminator, beating out Ed Sigmon of Chatsworth, Calif., who made his second final-round appearance of the season.  The Super Stock final was a family affair as Jimmy De Frank took the win over younger brother Tony.  Both drivers hail from Chatsworth, Calif., and drive '07 Cobalts.  Maple Valley, Wash., resident Brad Plourd earned his second Stock Eliminator win of the year, wheeling his '69 Camaro to the win over Los Angeles's Jeff Jerome in a '73 Duster.  Super Comp winner, Steve Williams of Loma Linda, Calif., grabbed the win over Eric Reyes of Oakland, Calif., and in Super Gas, Greg Ventura, Garden Grove, Calif., knocked off Pleasant Grove Utah's Ed Olpin.  Super Street racer Mike Lang, Northridge, Calif., drove his '72 Vega to the win over Glendale, Ariz., racer Dwight Downing who was behind the wheel of his '79 Arrow.  In Top Sportsman, Las Vegas's Roger Hall earned the win over Rick Takahashi, San Gabriel, Calif., while the Top Dragster win went to Ron Hartzell, Modesto, Calif., over Will Harrison, Livermore, Calif.  Tom Medlin, La Mirada, Calif., made his way to the winner's circle after beating Katie Sullivan, Corning, Calif., in the Sportsman Motorcycle final.

This was the last of seven races in the NHRA Pacific division's Lucas Oil Drag Racing Series schedule.  Racers may continue to earn points toward divisional and national titles at out-of-division races.  The final NHRA Lucas Oil Drag Racing Series event of the year is slated for October 19-21 in NHRA's Southeast division.

Event preview:

BAKERSFIELD, Calif.  – NHRA Pacific division Lucas Oil Drag Racing Series competitors will close out the 2007 season at Auto Club Famoso Raceway, Sept. 7-8.  The event is the last of seven in the region and is the final opportunity for racers to earn in-division points toward divisional and national championships.

Duane Shields of Boulder City, Nev., is leading the Top Alcohol Dragster points but has not made a final-round appearance since the division's race in Las Vegas in April, where he was the runner-up.  Shields had opened the season with two straight wins, at Firebird Int'l Raceway in Chandler, Ariz., and at Southwester Int'l Raceway in Tucson, Ariz.  Since then he has been to the semis twice and lost in the first round twice.  Jim Whiteley, Grand Junction, Colo., and Cody Perkins are in pursuit of Shields.  Whiteley earned his first win in the class in May at Auto Club Dragway in Fontana, Calif., and was runner-up at the division's last race at Infineon Raceway in Sonoma, Calif., as well as at an out-of-division race in Brainerd, Minn.  This is Whiteley's second year in the Top Alcohol Dragster ranks and his crew chief is Norm Grimes who tuned the Jack O'Bannon-owned ride of Rick Santos to five consecutive national championships.  Bluffdale, Utah's Perkins has two runner-up finishes on the year at out-of-division races in Denver and Acton, Mont.

In Top Alcohol Funny Car competition, Fullerton, Calif., resident Sean Bellemeur leads the charge on the strength of three wins and a runner-up finish in six races.  He was runner-up in Chandler before getting wins in Tucson, Fontana and an out-of-division race in Woodburn, Ore.  Bellemeur's closest competition has been Von Smith, a resident of Oak Ridge, Tenn., who is racing in the Pacific division this season.  Smith opened his season with a win at an out-of-division race in Houston and was runner-up to Bellemeur in Tucson.

He also won the division's last race, at Infineon Raceway.  The division's reigning champion, Doug Gordon of Paso Robles, Calif., has struggled this season and has not made it past the semis.  He is currently in fifth place in the point standings.

Although this is the last Pacific division Lucas Oil event of the season, racers may compete in other divisions and continue to earn points toward championships until the final Lucas Oil Drag Racing Series event of the year which is scheduled for Oct.19-21 in NHRA's Southeast division.
