WOODBURN, Ore. – NHRA Northwest division Lucas Oil Drag Racing Series competitors tackled the quarter-mile at Woodburn Dragstrip this weekend in the 31st Les Schwab Challenge.  In the end, defending division champions Thomas Bayer in Top Alcohol Dragster and Brian Hough in Top Alcohol Funny Car logged their first wins of 2008.

Fontana, Calif., resident Bayer, who is wheeling the rail owned and tuned by former division champ Steve Federlin of Oregon City, Ore., qualified in the No. 1 spot and had a bye run in the first round due to an odd number of entries for the TAD class.  In the semis he beat Justin Davis of Murietta, Calif., before taking on another former division champ in Joey Severance of Spanaway, Wash.  Bayer laid down a 5.556-second, 258.24 mph pass that was more than enough to cover Severance's abbreviated 9.478-second run.

Hough, who hails from Junction City, Ore., started the day from the No. 4 qualifying spot.  In the first round he beat Klamath Falls, Ore., racer Clint Thompson and in the semifinals Hough got the win over No. 1 qualifier Sean O'Bannon of Fontana, Calif.  In the final, Hough made a 6.015-second, 245.83 mph pass against Jason Rupert of Yorba Linda, Calif.  Rupert's run got out of control about mid-way through and resulted in a crash. Rupert was unhurt in the incident but he handed the win to Hough.

Glendale, Ariz., resident Dean Carter earned the win in Comp Eliminator, beating out Doug Lambeck of Corona Del Mar, Calif.  Super Stock racer Tony Mandella, Upland, Calif., wheeled his '90 Camaro to the win over Art Congdon, Calgary, Alb., in his '91 Calais.  Jody Lang, Puyallup, Wash., drove his '81 Malibu to the win in Stock Eliminator, ousting Hal Sorensen, Vancouver, Wash., in the final.  In Super Comp, John Young, Vancouver, Wash., bested Bob Woodruff, Maple Valley, Wash.  Buckley, Wash., racer Mike Ferderer earned the win in Super Gas, taking out John Whitmore, Myrtle Creek, Ore.  The Super Street winner was Thomas Golden, Aloha, Ore., over Tony Hernandez of Buckley, Wash.  Top Sportsman winner, Seattle's Barry Hobson, beat Daryl Hemley of Burley, Wash., while in Top Dragster, Bill Maness, Vancouver, Wash., took home the hardware over Mike Henderson, Tacoma, Wash.  Eric Johns, Milwaukie, Ore., rode his '05 Kawasaki to the winner's circle in Sportsman Motorcycle, beating out Al Omond of Surry, B.C.

Northwest division Lucas Oil Series racers head to Acton, Mont., for the next race.  Yellowstone Drag Strip will host the event Aug. 15-17.

Saturday

WOODBURN, Ore. – At the 31st Annual Les Schwab Challenge, a round of the NHRA Northwest division Lucas Oil Drag Racing Series at Woodburn Dragstrip, Thomas Bayer of Fontana, Calif., wheeled his Top Alcohol Dragster to the No. 1 qualifying spot and Sean O'Bannon, also from Fontana, moved to the top spot in Top Alcohol Funny Car.  After two days of qualifying, eliminations will start on Sunday.

Bayer, the division's defending TAD champ, improved on Friday's No. 1 qualifying effort with a 5.465-second, 263.85 mph pass.  The run was just enough to keep the Steve Federlin owned and tuned entry ahead of No. 2 qualifier Joey Severance.  The Spanaway, Wash., racer laid down a 5.496-second pass at 258.02 mph to move up from the seventh qualifying position.  Because of the odd number of entries for the eight-car field, Bayer will have a bye run in the opening round of eliminations.

O'Bannon came in to today's action in the No. 3 qualifying slot. He ripped a 5.884-second, 249.58 mph pass to move in to the top spot ahead of Jason Rupert, Yorba Linda, Calif.  Rupert did not make a pass in the initial day of qualifying and ran 5.895 seconds at 245.83 mph today.

J.D. Zink, Chico, Calif., kept his Comp Eliminator entry at the top of the field while all the other categories had new top qualifiers.  Jimmy De Frank, Thousand Oaks, Calif., took his '08 Cobalt to the top of the Super Stock field and is placed fourth in the Stock Eliminator standings.  The No. 1 qualifier in Stock Eliminator is Richland, Wash., racer Jim Waldo behind the wheel of his '02 Firebird.  Jirka Kaplan, Calgary, Alb., and his '63 Corvette set the pace in Top Sportsman, Paul Gladden, Tracy, Calif., moved from No. 2 to No. 1 in Top Dragster, and Van Smith, Portland, Ore., bested the Sportsman Motorcycle field.

Racing continues Sunday at Woodburn Dragstrip.  Gates open at 8 a.m. and eliminations start at 9 a.m.  Top Alcohol Dragster and Top Alcohol Funny Car will begin eliminations at noon.

Tickets for the 31st Annual Les Schwab Challenge are $ $25.  Children 6 to 14 years old are $5 and kids 5 and under are admitted free.

WOODBURN, Ore. – Woodburn Dragstrip will host the 31st Annual Les Schwab Challenge, a round of the NHRA Lucas Oil Drag Racing Series, July 11-13.  The race is the fourth of six in NHRA Northwest division competition.  It will feature drivers in eight categories, including 250 mph Top Alcohol Dragster and Top Alcohol Funny Car, vying for valuable points leading to divisional and national championships.  The division's Auto Max USA Top Sportsman Series, Top Dragster Series and the Sportsman Motorcycle Series presented by Harley Davidson will also run in conjunction with the event.

In Top Alcohol Dragster competition there are 11 points separating first place from third.  Shelton, Wash., racer Brandon Johnson leads the class after opening the season with an out-of-division win in Chandler, Ariz.  At the two Northwest division events he's attended, at Mission (B.C.) Raceway Park and Pacific Raceways in Kent, Wash., he was ousted in the first round.  Defending division champ Thomas Bayer is just 10 points off the pace.  The Fontana, Calif., resident, who is wheeling the rail owned and tuned by former division champion Steve Federlin of Oregon City, Ore., was runner-up at an out-of-division event in Fallon, Nev., after losing in the first round at Mission Raceway.  He went to the semis at Pacific Raceways.  Shawn Cowie of Richmond, B.C., is in third place in the point standings.  Cowie's best race of the season so far was at his home track in Mission where he was runner-up.

Sean O'Bannon of Ontario, Calif., leads in the Top Alcohol Funny Car points.  He has an 11-point advantage over Clint Thompson of Klammath Falls, Ore.  O'Bannon has been to four races and Thompson has been to three.  O'Bannon opened the year at Pacific division events where he had first and second round losses before scoring runner-up points at Mission Raceway and at Pacific Raceways.  Thompson was runner-up at a Pacific division event and beat O'Bannon in the final at Mission Raceway.  At Pacific Raceways he went to the semis.

A single point separates Super Stock racers Don Thomas and Norm Lapointe.  Both racers have been to five events this season and Thomas, a resident of Spruce Grove, Alb., scored the win at Mission Raceway where he beat Lapoint, who hails from Edmonton, Alb.

It was the best finish of the year for both racers.

The Super Comp title chase also features a racer with a one-point lead.  Dick Vander Meer, Nampa, Idaho, has the narrow margin over Cheryl Morris of Olympia, Wash.  Vander Meer has two semifinal round appearances while Morris's best showing was her runner-up finish at Pacific Raceways.
