Dixon sits fourth after Friday qualifying
Pomona, Friday: Three-time Winternationals winner Larry Dixon powered his Miller Lite dragster to the third quickest pass of Friday’s only qualifying session to position Don Prudhomme’s dragster in the No. 4 qualifying position at Auto Club Raceway at Pomona.
After Dixon’s rail suffered an ignition malfunction on Thursday’s opening qualifying attempt, the Miller-backed team rebounded like true champions as the two-time NHRA Top Fuel champion used a tune-up from crew chief Don Bender to blast the Miller Lite dragster to a performance of 4.533 seconds at 322.88 mph. It was the third quickest run of the Top Fuel category on Friday. Dixon sits fourth in the 16-car order with two qualifying sessions remaining.
“It was nice to get down the track,” Dixon said. “It takes a lot of pressure off of Donnie (Bender). Yesterday didn’t help with that. The car ran great today. I wish we could have gotten yesterday’s pass in because that would have allowed us to improve today. We’ll go out tomorrow and try to improve. The main thing was to get qualified and we’re qualified.”
