Desert delight: Fuller qualifies fourth
Phoenix, Saturday: After two days of qualifying, Valvoline Top Fuel dragster pilot “Hot Rod” Fuller turned up the desert heat with the fourth quickest qualifying pass of the weekend at 4.505 seconds and 326 mph.
“With all four qualifying rounds in the 4.50s, we’ve definitely got the car, the team, and the crew to win this race,” Fuller said. “I just need to do my part as a driver.”
Crew chief Lee Beard echoed those sentiments, but has designs on going even quicker. “We know we’ve got a little ground to gain on the No. 1 guy but we also know we have a good, consistent racecar that will take us well into eliminations,” Beard said. “We definitely have the potential to win, we just don’t have our hand on the right knob yet to run what the top guy is running at this point. We’re very close, which is encouraging.”
First out of the box Sunday is a match-up with Doug Herbert, who qualified 13th out of 16 cars.
