Ashley pleased with performance heading into Houston

Houston, prerace: As Funny Car driver Mike Ashley prepares for the NHRA O'Reilly Spring Nationals he is pleased with the continual performance improvements of his Skull Gear Chevy Monte Carlo.

"Things really look good," said the optimistic Ashley. "In Gainesville, we had the exact same time as the eventual event winner, which shows we definitely have the technology and horsepower to compete with the top teams."

In the first round of eliminations at the ACDelco Gatornationals in Florida, Ashley and Ron Capps delivered matching 4.799 second runs, with Capps scoring the win because of his quicker reaction time -- .065 seconds to Ashley's .086.

"I am really pleased with our performance so far this year," Ashley said. "Houston is only the fourth race out of 23, and we're really coming into our potential. Mark Oswald [crew chief] and the guys have things moving in the right direction. The things we've been working on are showing results, and they have a good handle on the new Goodyears too."

Effective at the Gainesville race two weeks ago, Goodyear announced that the only available tire for Top Fuel and Funny Car competitors would be the Goodyear 2420 tire. The new tires deliver a marked change from the previously-used 1430s and required teams to extensively test and adjust car-setup in order to maintain effective racing operations.

"I know that we will be running at the top of the field very quickly," Ashley said.
