'Dougzilla' heads to Texas hungry for a victory
Houston, pre-race: Doug Herbert and the Snap-on Racing team will be looking for their first victory of the young 2006 season at this weekend's O'Reilly NHRA Spring Nationals at Houston Raceway Park in Texas.
Herbert is in the middle of a tight battle in POWERade Drag Racing Series Top Fuel point standings. The driver of the Snap-on Tools/Doug Herbert Performance dragster is currently seventh in the standings on the strength of a pair of semifinal finishes at the first three races of the season. Herbert is less than one round win (20 points) out of the fourth spot and a victory in Texas would move the 38-year-old transplanted North Carolinian solidly into the Top 5.
"We had a chance to go back to the shop in North Carolina to prepare for Houston and Las Vegas," said Herbert. "Crew chief Wayne Dupuy and the Snap-on team worked really hard in Gainesville and our semifinal finish was due in large part to the team's determination. When you consider that we were running the new Goodyear tire and a new one-piece Top Fuel body built by Spitzer Race Cars, then you get an idea of the kind of effort the Snap-on team gave down in Florida. We've got a great bunch of guys working on this car and I feel very confident that we will be in the winner's circle soon."
Herbert is no stranger to success in Houston. 'Dougzilla' scored the second NHRA national event victory of his career at the Spring Nationals in 1999, a season in which he reached six final rounds and won four races. With a win in Houston this weekend, Herbert could reestablish himself as a serious threat in the 2006 championship title hunt.
