Millican reaches semifinals

Houston, Sunday: Clay Millican and Kenny Koretsky’s Werner Enterprises/Nitro Fish Top Fuel dragster team made amends for a misstep two weeks ago by turning a No. 12 qualifying effort at the O’Reilly Spring Nationals into a semifinal finish Sunday at Houston Raceway Park.

“We aren’t griping one bit ... compared to what happened at Gainesville (Fla., when he didn’t qualify for the Gatornationals),” Millican said. “We made three nice, clean runs down the track and that gives Mike (Kloeber, crew chief) an opportunity to figure out the tune-up. Now that we are going down the track, Mike will work on lowering our times.”

Millican began the day by knocking out No. 6 qualifier Rod Fuller with a 4.640-second, 318.47-mph run and then he added Hillary Will to his list.  Millican left the starting line first and never looked back, winning with a 4.663 at 315.27 to 7.071 at 117.34. But his hope of landing in the finals disappeared when POWERade Series point leader Melanie Troxel ran 4.607 at 315.56 to Millican’s traction-troubled 5.548 at 178.28.
