A fine day in Nevada for Mr. Burkart
Las Vegas, Friday: Phil Burkart joined his teammate Del Worsham by putting two great laps on the board here today, running a 2nd-best 4.835 on Friday afternoon and then backing that up with a strong 4.773 under the lights. The effort put him in the No. 6 spot in what is already a very stout field. By the end of the day on Friday, nine cars had dipped into the 4.70s, with Robert Hight anchoring the field on the strength of his 4.702 in the No. 1 spot.
"The first run was sweet, to run like that in the afternoon, and then we came right back and took her end-to-end under the lights, just like we're supposed to," Burkart said. "You know the Friday night run might be your one chance to really put a number up here, because both of the Saturday runs should be in the sunshine, so you trust your guys to give you a good car and you lean on yourself to pay them back with a good driving job. It all worked, and it's all good.
"We had a really neat day here today, hosting about 50 high school kids so that we could show them real racing and tell them how stupid it is to race on the street, and they were awesome. They were polite, respectful, and they had the time of their lives. They were really rooting for us, and that always helps. Between that and a few other fun interviews I did today, along with two great laps, I'm pretty pumped up right now. It was a great day."
