A splendid day in Las Vegas for Mr. Worsham

Las Vegas, Friday: Del Worsham powered his red Checker, Schuck's, Kragen Monte Carlo to a pair of solid efforts on Friday, posting a 4.865 under the afternoon sun, and then following that up with a brilliant 4.750, which was good enough to move him into the No. 3 spot after one day. The No. 3 position also broke up the trifecta of Force drivers who were aiming for their second straight 1-2-3 qualifying placement. Robert Hight currently sits No. 1 (4.702,) with John Force No. 2 (4.715,) Worsham 3rd, and Eric Medlen No. 4 (4.758.)

"I'll admit that I get a little anxious when we have conditions like this," Worsham said. "Basically, everything for the weekend can be on the line in this one session. Three of the four runs will be daylight runs, so the Friday night session is just so important, and when your final qualifying position is contingent upon that one run, you start to think about broken blower belts, dropping cylinders, all the little things that can slow you down and ruin your night.

"Instead, she ran right down there and we put a real good lap on the board, which was just so critical. I don't know if we'll end up No. 3 or not, but anyone who can run better than 4.75 during the day tomorrow will absolutely earn the spot. I think we will see some improvement over the daylight session today, just because we've all had time on the track now and it's not a blind shot. But dipping into the mid-4.70s during the day won't be easy."
