Schumacher stays No. 1

Las Vegas, Saturday: Tony "The Sarge" Schumacher, who handles the controls of the U.S. Army Top Fuel dragster, will start from the number one spot here Sunday in the Nationals at The Strip at Las Vegas Motor Speedway.

Schumacher used a Friday qualifying effort of 4.501-seconds at 329.91 mph to claim his fourth pole of the season and the 26th of his career.

"As I have said before, it's fine to be number one, but you still have to do something with it," he offered. "We absolutely need to go rounds tomorrow. It's still early in the year, but you don't want to let the people in front of you in the points run away and hide."

The Chicago native will take on 16th-place qualifier, Alan Bradshaw, in the opening round of final eliminations beginning at 11 a.m. PDT.

"This U.S. Army team remains a confident bunch," said Schumacher. "We all have to be machines tomorrow."

Schumacher, who is the defending NHRA POWERade Top Fuel world champion, will be looking to snap a two race slump that had him departing in the first round each time.

"We can't dwell on the past - that's over with," he added. "This is a brand new race weekend. We've got an opportunity here in Vegas to jump start our season. I'm really looking forward to making some waves on Sunday."
