Dixon qualifies second
Las Vegas, Saturday: For the third time in five races, two-time NHRA Top Fuel champion Larry Dixon claimed the No. 2 qualifying position as Dixon finished second in the 16-car Top Fuel order with a 4.528-second elapsed time Saturday at The Strip at Las Vegas Motor Speedway.
After racing to the second quickest pass of the opening day of qualifying for the seventh annual Summitracing.com Nationals, 4.528-seconds, the veteran Top Fuel racer and winner of 38 NHRA national events remained second in the Top Fuel order following the completion of all four qualifying sessions. Dixon’s 330.80 mph speed was his fastest pass of the 2006 season, bettering his 330.39 mph mark at the Phoenix event in February. Dixon’s rail overpowered the LVMS drag strip on both of Saturday’s attempts, but his opening E.T. held for the second quickest pass of the weekend.
“We got our car qualified good again, which is nice,” Dixon said. “That gives us lane choice and lets Donnie (Bender) decide which pair in the order we’ll run. I guess those are the perks of qualifying well.
“Overall, the team would have liked to have seen a couple of more runs down the race track. Hopefully, we got those runs out of the way and we’ll be fine on race day.”
Dixon goes for his second consecutive victory at the spring Las Vegas event when he battles No. 15 qualifier Mike Strasburg in the opening round of Top Fuel eliminations at 11 a.m. (PT) on Sunday. Dixon has advanced to the final round of this race that past four seasons, and has a 3-0 career mark versus the Utah-based racer.
