Fuller readies for hometown glory
Las Vegas, Saturday: Racing at his home track, Top Fuel championship contender "Hot Rod" Fuller will begin his quest for the title of Sunday's NHRA SummitRacing.com Nationals from the No. 9 position. Stopping the quarter-mile timers at 4.586 seconds at 327.59 mph, the Lee Beard-tuned Ahern Rentals-branded dragster will line up against Doug Kalitta's Mac Tools rail in Round 1.
Running this weekend in the memory of Dayna Ahern, the 20-year-old daughter of Ahern Rentals President Don Ahern of Las Vegas who was killed last week in a traffic accident, Fuller will start race day third in the world rankings with an eye on closing in on current leader Melanie Troxel, whom he trails by 132 points.
"We made our best run in the heat and considering the hot weather we've had all weekend that is very encouraging," Fuller said. "The desert sun puts a lot of heat into the track but Beard manages engine power better than anyone else. He's a master at getting the car down a hot track and this race has been no exception. Sunday's conditions should be pretty much the same so we're looking for great results."
Fuller already has a win this year having captured the title of the Phoenix event in February. So far in the first four national events, four different drivers have ended the day in the winner's circle.
"There's a lot of parity in the class right now," Fuller said. "It's good because it pushes you to be your best every pass. We have a great team here with David Powers and sponsors like Valvoline, LP Building Products, and 84 Lumber. We were fortunate enough to show them a win earlier this year. We'd love to repeat that here.
"Obviously winning at my home track would be a personal highlight. It's so cool to have all the fans stop by and tell you they're pulling for you. As much as I want to win for my team and our sponsors, I also want to give these great Las Vegas fans a win from one of the locals."
