Morgan Lucas GEICO/Lucas Oil dragster

Las Vegas, Sunday: Morgan Lucas, driving the Lucas Oil flagship racing machine, kept his Top Fuel streak alive by avoiding a first round loss with his opening round victory against Hillary Will on ‘The Strip” at the Las Vegas Motor Speedway for the seventh annual Summitracing.com NHRA Nationals.  Lucas powered his way past the No. 5 qualifier overcoming odds from his No. 12 starting position after qualifying with a time of 4.604 seconds, 311.27 mph.  The improvement showed the promised results on that race run with an elapsed time of 4.580 seconds at a weekend best speed of 316.38 mph.Although he advanced to the quarterfinals for the fourth successive race, he again raced POWERade points leader, Melanie Troxel for the third time in five races and regrettably was defeated.  She ran an elapsed time of 4.542 seconds to Lucas’ time of 4.714 seconds at a speed of 311.41 mph.

“Those guys are the points leader for a reason and they deserve to be,” said the 22-year old Lucas.  “We told ourselves in the beginning of the year that we needed to eliminate first round losses and that’s what is going to help us with points at the end of the year. 

“I have to make the point we’re a brand new race team and in our defense we’ve won first round in all five of our races.  I feel we’ve done exceptionally well with our two great crew chiefs (John Stewart and Ronnie Thompson) and we’re finding out the little knick-knock problems.  The next race we are going to try to qualify a little bit better and we will be okay.  I’m not upset, disappointed or hurt, so from this point, we’re just looking forward to Bristol.”

This now keeps Lucas in the fifth position in the POWERade Top Fuel standings with 281 points and is 202 markers in arrears of Troxel.
