Dixon will start 12th
Bristol, Saturday: Two-time NHRA Top Fuel champion Larry Dixon positioned his Miller Lite dragster in the No. 12 starting spot Saturday at Bristol Dragway as qualifying for the sixth annual O’Reilly Thunder Valley Nationals was completed.
Dixon saved his best qualifying pass of the weekend for his fourth and final attempt when he used a tune-up from crew chief Don Bender to blast the Miller Lite/Lucas Oil rail to a pass of 4.658 seconds at 324.20 mph to claim the 12th starting spot in the 16-car Top Fuel order. Dixon also posted a pass of 4.686-seconds Friday evening under the lights at the Bruton Smith-owned facility. It marks just the eighth time in his driving career that Dixon has qualified in the No. 12 position.
“We picked up a little bit on our final run, but we didn’t pick up as much as we wanted to,” Dixon said. “After spinning the tires on the first run, it made us a little more cautious than we needed to be, but we wanted to make sure the car went down the track and it did.”
Dixon, who won at Bristol Dragway in 2002, will face off against No. 5 qualifier Clay Millican in the first round of Top Fuel eliminations.
