Kalitta hopeful to repeat his repeat performance in Atlanta
Atlanta, prerace: One of the many highlights of Doug Kalitta's 2005 NHRA POWERade Drag Racing Series season was pairing back-to-back wins in Bristol, Tenn., and Atlanta. By winning the previous NHRA national event this year in Bristol last weekend, the stage is now set for Kalitta, driver of the bright red, 7,000 horsepower Mac Tools Top Fuel dragster, and his team to possibly repeat their consecutive feat in Atlanta.
This weekend, May 4-7, Kalitta and his Mac Tools team return to Atlanta Dragway in Commerce, Ga., just northeast of downtown Atlanta, for the Summit Racing Equipment NHRA Southern Nationals in hopes of repeating their "double-up" of a year ago and defending their Top Fuel title in the NHRA's quickest and fastest class.
"Bristol was huge for us," Kalitta said. "We had not won since Brainerd (Minn.) last August, so it's definitely a relief to get another win, and we jumped from 6th to 3rd in the [championship] points, so it was a really great weekend.
"I just hope we have another good outing in Atlanta. Last year was really cool to win Bristol and Atlanta back-to-back, but we know it will be tough to do that again. Our car ran great in Bristol and it responded great to all of the changes we made to it especially Sunday, so hopefully it will do the same for us in Atlanta and we can go to the winner's circle again. Summit Racing Equipment (event sponsor) has been with us as an associate sponsor for a few years now too, so we really want to put on a great show for them as well."
