Dixon finishes sixth, posts top speed of opening day

Atlanta, Friday: Two-time NHRA Top Fuel champion Larry Dixon blasted his Miller Lite dragster to the fastest speed of the opening day of qualifying for the 26th annual Summit Racing Southern Nationals when he clocked a run of 4.559 seconds at a blistering 329.10 mph Friday evening at Atlanta Dragway.

Following a brief rain delay, the three-time winner of the Atlanta NHRA race (1996, 2002-03) opened the day in the No. 13 position after his Miller-backed rail lost traction on its opening attempt of the weekend. Then, under the lights at "Georgia's House of Speed," the 38-time NHRA winner used a tune-up from crew chief Don Bender to record the 4.559, 329.10 effort, positioning the Miller Lite/Lucas Oil dragster in the No. 6 qualifying position. Dixon recorded top speed of the meet (327.82 mph) two races ago in Las Vegas.

"The first run, the car shook the tires," Dixon said. "We made some adjustments and got the car running on all eight cylinders, and it ran pretty good. Tomorrow, we'll see how the weather is and if it allows us to improve, then that's our goal."
