Schumacher on provisional pole

Columbus, Friday: Tony "The Sarge" Schumacher, aboard his U.S. Army Top Fuel dragster, swiped the number one starting position after the first day of action here Friday for the Pontiac Performance Nationals at National Trail Raceway.

During a rain-shortened evening qualifying session, Schumacher put up a track-record setting 4.476-second pass at 331.53 mph to take the provisional pole position going into the final day of qualifying on Saturday.

"I was a bit surprised at what popped up on the board," said the Chicago native, who was among seven drivers who managed to clear the second session before the rain moved in. "I believe Alan Johnson (his crew chief) is getting a good handle on this race car."

Schumacher is bidding for his fifth pole of the year and the 27th of his career.

"As I have stated before, we have to start developing some consistency," he added. "Tomorrow's runs will be important to have a good feeling going into race day."
