Johnson Jr. drives to No. 12 spot

Topeka, Friday: Tommy Johnson Jr. raced his Don “the Snake” Prudhomme-owned Skoal Racing Funny Car to the No. 12 provisional qualifying position Friday at Heartland Park Topeka.

On a warm and muggy Friday afternoon, the Iowa native blistered the hot Heartland Park quarter mile in 4.967 seconds at 299.86 mph to record the fifth quickest pass of the first qualifying session at the 18th annual O’Reilly Summer Nationals. The seven-time NHRA winner drove to a run of 4.933 at 303.71 on Friday evening to record the 12th quickest Funny Car effort of the day with two qualifying sessions remaining. Johnson qualified fourth at the Topeka race last May.

“We had a good run on the first pass,” Johnson said. “We stepped on it for the evening run in the good conditions and we found out that the blower went away on us. After the run, we looked at everything and the blower went away and the car didn’t run as good. It’s disappointing because it was a brand new blower and we were ready to step up tonight. We’ll be strong on race day though.”
