Jim Yates Wiley X Eyewear Pontiac GXP

Chicago, Saturday: Jim Yates put his SeaRay Boats/B&W Pontiac GTO into the No. 7 berth for Sunday's CARQUEST Nationals at Route 66 Raceway.

Yates, of Occoquan, Va., reeled off consistent times of 6.668, 6.667 and 6.687 seconds on only three qualifying runs.  Inclement weather forced NHRA officials to cancel the final run Saturday afternoon when the day's first session took almost five hours to complete due to rain delays.

His 6.667-second run matches him against Erica Enders (No. 10, 6.680 at 207.02 mph) in the first round.

"We had a new motor in our GTO this weekend and Grump (engine builder/tuner Bill 'Grumpy' Jenkins) was getting it dialed in. We could've used another run," said Yates.
