Worsham No. 1 after day one

St. Louis, Friday: Del Worsham streaked to a big 4.842-second E.T. on his second run Friday, pacing the field to spend the night in the No. 1 position, with two runs left on Saturday. For bragging rights, he also claimed "Top Speed" for the day, clocking in at 321.96 mph. His Checker, Schuck's, Kragen Monte Carlo's speed was the only mark above 320 in the class.

"That run is 100% totally my dad's, he called the shot," Worsham said. "We found a little glitch we had in the car, for how many runs I'm not sure but it's probably what caused us to smoke the tires in round one last weekend, so we had a better handle on what the car was going to do. As we were finalizing the tune-up, he stood right up and said 'This is what we're going to do' and his call was pretty aggressive. We've just been so close, but always behind this year, so we went for it and hit it pretty well.

"We're not a low qualifying type of team, usually, but right now we're just pushing it a little because being conservative at this point in the season isn't going to do anything for us. That's not to say we're going for the jugular on every lap from here out, but we're going to push hard to be fast. We do get one more night session tomorrow, when all the big boys will be aiming to go right by us, so we'll see how this all stacks up when it's over tomorrow night. Either way, I'm happy with this number, happy to be low overnight, and happy that we did something we aimed to do."
