Scott Weis
Serta/Barrett Enterprises dragster

Weis sits in the No. 9 position

St. Louis, Friday: Top Fuel pilot Scott Weis was one of the first drivers to navigate the very hot and relatively raw dragstrip during Friday's qualifying at the O'Reilly NHRA Midwest Nationals at Gateway International Raceway just outside of St. Louis. Weis drove the Barrett Enterprises/St. Louis Carpenters Union digger to a first lap of 4.919 seconds at 286.98 mph.

"I was thrilled to make it down the racetrack in the heat like this," said an exuberant Weis. "It put a hole out so we were a little down on power, but we didn't hurt the motor."

As the evening brought on the second session, Weis, already sitting in the seventh position, took his rail back to the Gateway starting line. He launched and was able to improve on the earlier run, by laying down a very clean 4.717 second blast at 305.56 mph to put him into the ninth position as the day ended.

"I'm happy to see that we aren't hurting parts and I could drive it to the stripe," Weis said. "We have lots of union carpenters here cheering us on and seeing NHRA POWERade drag racing for the first time. We put a hole out again at about half track. If we hadn't dropped the hole, I'm confident that we would have posted a .65-67. Let's see what we can do on Saturday. I'm thrilled with our team’s performance today though. They work very hard for me and the Barretts."
