Anderson knows roll to championship must start at Sonoma
Sonoma, prerace: Greg Anderson, driver of the KB Racing LLC-owned, Summit Racing Equipment-backed Pro Stock Pontiac GTO, knows he must make a move at this weekend’s 19th annual NHRA FRAM Autolite Nationals at Infineon Raceway in Sonoma, Calif., if he is to win his fourth NHRA POWERade Pro Stock point championship.
Last weekend at Seattle, it seemed that no Pro Stock driver in the top ten in points was going to take the forefront that sees very few points separating the leaders. In the opening round, only two drivers in the top ten standing moved to the second round.
“We missed a very big opportunity in Seattle, but that race is behind us,” said Anderson, who left Seattle second in the 2006 Pro Stock point chase. “We must now turn our attention to Sonoma. I know my new Summit Racing Pontiac is performing well and we must use that advantage this weekend. Last year, I came into the FRAM Autolite Nationals second in points and won the race. That began a roll that carried me to my third championship. If I’m going to win my fourth, it must start right here this weekend.”
In 2005, Sonoma was the start of good things for Anderson and his Pontiac GTO, which like this year he had debuted at Denver. The FRAM Autolite Nationals marked the beginning of six final rounds in the final nine races for Anderson. During that roll, he won five of the six final rounds.
Since 2002, Anderson has been in four final rounds at Infineon Raceway. Last year he defeated Kurt Johnson and in 2004 was victorious over Dave Connolly. He was runner- up to Larry Morgan (2002) and Jeg Coughlin (2003). He also has three No. 1s at the Sonoma track (2002-2004).
Entering Sonoma, Anderson’s teammate Jason Line, who drives an identical Summit Racing Pontiac GTO, leads the NHRA POWERade Pro Stock point standing with 935 points. Anderson is second, 25 points behind Line and 31 points ahead of Dave Connolly, who is third in the standing. Jim Yates (fourth) and Kurt Johnson (fifth) round out the top five.
