Johnson Jr. races to No. 10 spot

Sonoma, Friday: Tommy Johnson Jr. powered his special edition Skoal Racing Chevy Funny Car to the No. 10 qualifying position Friday at Infineon Raceway to kick-off qualifying for the 19th annual FRAM-Autolite Nationals with a 4.857-second pass.

The veteran nitro pilot used a tune-up from seasoned crew chief Mike Green to race his Don “the Snake” Prudhomme-owned Monte Carlo to a performance of 4.857 seconds at 314.31 mph to record the 10th quickest elapsed time of the day. Johnson’s Chevy lost traction on its opening attempt of the weekend.

“It ran good early on the night run, but then we had some issues down track,” Johnson said. “I’m happy that we got our car qualified in the show, but we should be able to improve on that tomorrow with the cool conditions and since the track is starting to come around.”
