Ashley solidly in field after first day

Memphis, Friday: NHRA POWERade Funny Car driver Mike Ashley decided the best way to erase a bad memory is to replace it with a good one. Ashley did just that during provisional qualifying for the O’Reilly NHRA Mid-South Nationals as he drove the Knoll Gas – Torco Race Fuels Funny Car to the sixth quickest elapsed time during a rain-shortened day of competition.

Ashley thundered to a 4.942, 303.50 in just the second pair down a race track that was considered “green” following an extensive rain delay.

“It was important for me to get a good run under my belt,” Ashley said. “The Friday night session is so important. Coming off of the major disappointment last week, I was happy with the way the car and the crew performed. I just wasn’t happy with my performance. It was good to get that out of the way and knock the rust off. It was even better to get that behind me.

“Brian Corradi and Knoll Gas – Torco Race Fuels crew did a great job in preparing this car. I want to win this weekend.”
