Weis just misses field in heat

Memphis, Saturday: Top Fuel pilot Scott Weis narrowly missed the quick field in Top Fuel at the O'Reilly Mid-South Nationals at Memphis Motorsports Park. Enduring triple digit temperatures and high humidity as well, the Barrett Enterprises/Carpenters Union dragster fell short of being able to race on Sunday. The team was missing an important member as Joe Weis, the Patriarch of the Weis Family race team was sidelined with injuries he sustained on Thursday at the racetrack. Weis was setting up the family motorhome, when the ladder he was using collapsed, sending Mr. Weis to the ground, breaking seven ribs. The elder Weis normally handles the blower servicing on the racecar.

"We are, needless to say, very sad about Dad's injuries," said Weis. "He will be sidelined for a few weeks. We certainly missed his help and input on the racecar. The second qualifying session on Friday evening was canceled because of a few hour rain delay. We could have used that to get more information and would probably have found the two 100th's that we missed the field by. We certainly missed Dad this weekend."
