Ashley meets familiar foe in eliminations
Richmond, Saturday: NHRA POWERade Funny Car driver Mike Ashley would love to gain an upper hand in his head-to-head series with past world champion Tony Pedregon following tomorrow’s first round during the inaugural Torco Race Fuels NHRA Nationals at Virginia Motorsports Park. Ashley concluded the day as the 11th quickest on the strength of Friday’s 4.838, 302.01. “It will be a good race,” Ashley said. “We’ve beat Tony once and he got us once. I usually drive my own race and don’t worry about who is in the other lane. That’s what I will do tomorrow.” Ashley admitted that he and crew chief Brian Corradi flirted on the conservative side Friday evening but today was to be their aggressive approach. He had more horsepower than the track could handle on both attempts. “We were swinging for the fence but just didn’t connect,” Ashley said. “With the conditions we faced to today, it was the most logical choice. The race track needs some more rubber on it. It should come around tomorrow for us.” Ashley and Pedregon have met twice in 2006 and they each have a win apiece.
