For Grubnic, racing in Las Vegas is a thing of beauty
Las Vegas, prerace: The NHRA POWERade Drag Racing Series is a welcome assault on the senses. It’s incredibly loud. Nitromethane fumes invade your nostrils and tire smoke fills the air. Wild-looking race cars scream down the quarter-mile drag strip at more than 300 mph. It’s not exactly the place you’d expect to find those white-jacketed beauty consultants you see behind the cosmetics counter at your local department store. But they’re coming to the NHRA ACDelco Las Vegas Nationals at The Strip at Las Vegas Motor Speedway Oct. 26-29 and you can thank NHRA Top Fuel Dragster driver David Grubnic for that.
Grubnic, a native of Brisbane, Australia, is sponsored by StriVectin-SD. It originally was tested and marketed as a stretch mark cream until it was discovered StriVectin-SD also served as an effective anti-wrinkle product, which generated the slogan, “Better than Botox?”
StriVectin-SD held a contest for department stores which generated increased sales from the previous year. (According to company officials, most stores increase an average of 85 percent from the previous year.) Winning store associates – a.k.a. beauty consultants – will receive an all-expense-paid trip to Las Vegas for the NHRA ACDelco Las Vegas Nationals, including hotel accommodations at the MGM Signature and a weekend on their own to explore the city. At the drag strip, they will receive the experience of a lifetime, complete with suite tickets, hospitality, lunch, gift bags, hats and shirts. It’s an effective incentive: StriVectin-SD officials claim sales of their product increase by as much as 40% just before the contest ends.
Grubnic does not seem to mind sharing his space with the beauty consultants.
“We love racing in Vegas,” Grubnic said. “The facility at the The Strip is one, if not the, best racetracks we race on (during) the entire NHRA POWERade Drag Racing Series tour. Everything there is top-notch from the racing surface to the pit area. There’s always a huge crowd of fans there every time we race, so you bet, I can’t wait to get back to Vegas. Besides, there’s always something to do there when we’re not at the race track. It’s an awesome city.”
Grubnic enjoys racing in Las Vegas for one other reason: he won the $100,000 Bud Shootout in Las Vegas in 2004 in his first try. Since he is in the top seven in NHRA POWERade Drag Racing Series in Bud Shootout points coming into the Las Vegas race, he holds a guaranteed starting berth for the opportunity at another lucrative payday on Saturday, Oct. 28, for the 2006 edition of the Bud Shootout.
