Schumacher stays No. 1

Las Vegas, Saturday: Tony "The Sarge" Schumacher, who pilots the U.S. Army Top Fuel dragster, secured his 13th pole of the season here Saturday after the final day of qualifying for tomorrow's ACDelco Las Vegas Nationals at The Strip at Las Vegas Motor Speedway.

Beyond his pole qualifying effort, Schumacher also lost in the semifinals of the Budweiser Shootout, which was a special race-within-a-race offering a $100,000 check to the winner.

Despite posting a 4.531-second pass at 326.71 mph, Schumacher couldn't quite slip by Rod Fuller in the second round of the Bud Shootout. He was the defending champion of the event.

"It was a terrific race that we just came up short on," said the Chicago native. "The good news is that we had a couple of solid runs today (he also recorded a 4.500- second trip at 324.59 mph). As a result, we're clearly ready to go for Sunday."

Schumacher will now focus on the ACDelco Las Vegas Nationals where he will meet 16th-place qualifier, Mike Strasburg, in the first round of eliminations beginning at 11 a.m. PST.

"Today was about the money and tomorrow is all about the points," he added. "We're looking forward to the challenge ahead."
