J.R. Todd Lucas Oil Octane Booster dragster

Las Vegas, Saturday: J.R. Todd and Steve Torrence continued their good qualifying performances during the ACDelco Las Vegas Nationals at The Strip at Las Vegas Motor Speedway with Todd coming in third and newcomer Torrence 11th.

Todd, fighting for a berth in the POWERade Series top 10, was consistent, finishing with a best of 4.526 seconds at 320.20 mph.  He squares off against Larry Dixon (14th, 4.587 at 325.22) in the opening round.

"We started Saturday with our quickest run and if Jimmy (Walsh, crew chief) can keep the car running like that, we should be in good shape for Sunday.  The car shook real hard on the second run and I shut it off.  We hope to repeat what we've been doing on Sunday's recently -- going rounds."

Torrence, meanwhile, also qualified 11th in his first Top Fuel race at Richmond, Va., two weeks ago, but he ran his quickest (4.583 seconds) and fastest (326.56 mph) Saturday.

"We got down the race track twice (Saturday) and continued our learning process," he said.  "I'm looking forward to the race."
