Koretsky loses close one

Las Vegas, Sunday: Although he has not regularly driven an NHRA Pro Stock car for more than a year, Kenny Koretsky continues to show he hasn’t lost anything.

The man nicknamed “Captain Chaos” did everything he could to take a first-round Pro Stock victory away from Tommy Lee in the opening round of the ACDelco Las Vegas Nationals Sunday at The Strip at Las Vegas Motor Speedway.

Koretsky, the No. 12 qualifier, left the starting line with a .018-second reaction against Lee and held the advantage until the last few feet of the 1320 in the quarter-mile. That’s when  Lee (.064 reaction, 6.762 seconds at 203.43 mph) turned on the win light –  five-thousandths of a second ahead of Koretsky’s 6.762 seconds at 203.43 mph in  the Nitro Fish/Indicom Electric Fast Boys Racing Chevy Cobalt.

“We need to get better on race day,” said Koretsky, who merged his team with Greg Hill’s two weeks ago, “but we that just takes time. We have a good car, good horsepower and good team. I am excited.

“I have been working with Clay Millican (driver of Koretsky’s Top Fuel dragster) and Jerry Eckman (a former Pro Stock team driver and Koretsky crew member) to fine-tune my driving skills. Greg and I didn’t expect the success we’ ve had in our first two races. We are very pleased.”
