Larry Dixon Rapisarda Racing dragster

Pomona, Friday: Larry Dixon quietly moved up the NHRA POWERade Top Fuel qualifying ladder on Friday at the 42nd annual Automobile Club of Southern California Finals.

Dixon drove his Miller Lite dragster to a 4.549-second pass at 322.24 mph during the second of four scheduled qualifying sessions. The time moved Dixon up from ninth to seventh place. More importantly, it gave crew chief Don Bender solid data for the Auto Club Raceway surface.

"It's great that we improved," Dixon said. "So far the car has been very predictable. They put a certain setup in the car and we got the numbers they expected from it. We tried to pick up the pace a little from Thursday and we did that.

"A cylinder went out near the end of the track, which hurt the ET so tomorrow we want to come out here and run on all eight cylinders tomorrow and see what happens."
