Worsham moves up to 11th with improved performance
Pomona, Friday: Del Worsham drove his Checker, Schuck's, Kragen Chevy to a solid 4.800 at 327.03 mph, moving him from well outside the field to the No. 11 spot overnight. Two more qualifying sessions are scheduled for Saturday, though the weather forecast is not good.
"We all know how the weather is, especially here in Southern California, but the forecast was bad enough for just about every team to be up there today making a lap as if it were their last shot," Worsham said. "If it does rain, this is how it will be, but like I said, you never know. Either way, the object there was for us to make a full lap. Believe it or not, we had not crossed the finish line under power since round one in Las Vegas, last fall. At the race here last fall, we either blew up or smoked the tires before the lights, and we never did make a full pull in preseason, although that was mostly by design. So, even though a 4.800 doesn't look that impressive, it was a great first step for us and we can really build from there. Plus, you know, if it runs a thousandth quicker and is a 4.799, everyone thinks it's way better than a 4.80, but I don't care. I just wanted to get to the other end."
