Bernstein hopes past success translate to strong weekend
Phoenix, prerace: Six-time champion Kenny Bernstein is the only driver to have won at Firebird International Raceway in both the Funny Car and Top Fuel categories. He drove to victory circle in 1986, the second of his four Funny Car championship years, and celebrated his first Top Fuel victory at this track in 1991. He won again in 1996, the first of his two Top Fuel championship years. The Checker Schuck’s Kragen Nationals Feb. 23-25 will mark Bernstein’s second appearance in his driving comeback at the wheel of the Monster Energy/Lucas Oil Funny Car. Bernstein, who retired at the end of the 2002 season but was pressed into action again in 2003 when his son Brandon suffered back injuries that sidelined him for the remainder of the year, surprised the motor sports media last year announcing that he would return to the Funny Car ranks in 2007. “We started this team from the Mac Tool box up,” said Bernstein. “We have spent many hours in pre-season testing, and between the season opener in “This category promises to be filled with much drama. At “Our team is dedicated and has been putting forth every effort to get this car running quick and fast.”
