Windham ready to put Big-O Tires Chevy top 16

Las Vegas, prerace: Wet weather may have doused any opportunity Bill Windham had of qualifying for his first NHRA Pro Stock race, but it certainly didn’t dampen his enthusiasm. Nor did it prevent the National Tire and Battery Chevrolet Cobalt from being judged Best Appearing Car by NHRA officials (April 1) at Houston.

With that trophy now on his mantel, Windham hopes to successfully launch his competitive career by qualifying for Sunday’s SummitRacing.com Nationals at The Strip at Las Vegas Motor Speedway. The 50-year-old owner of multiple Big-O Tire Stores in Northern California, Windham eventually wants to add at least one race winner’s trophy to the one he picked up at Houston.

“Things have been going well and I’m looking forward to getting on the Las Vegas track,” Windham said. “I feel pretty good about this race. It was unfortunate that we had rain all day Saturday at Houston and didn’t get in our last two qualifying runs because we all felt we could do better than we did on Friday. We shook the tires real bad on one run.

“I think it’s pretty obvious that we would be very happy to qualify for Sunday’s race. Greg Hill has a good team that includes my teammate Kenny Koretsky. We have two good crew chiefs in Eddie Guarnaccia and Tomi Laine and we have good power from Steve Schmidt engines.”

The weather outlook for Las Vegas is quite favorable and Windham has the opportunity to compete on one of the top tracks on the NHRA POWERade Series tour.
