Connolly advances to semifinals; maintains hold on third place

Las Vegas, Sunday: Once again, Dave Connolly’s march to an NHRA Pro Stock national event final-round appearance was interrupted one round short of his goal. This time, however, it prevented him from squaring off against his Slammers Ultimate Milk teammate, Jeg Coughlin.

Until then, Connolly said his Torco Racing Fuels/Slammers Ultimate Milk Chevy Cobalt had been running well. He qualified second – behind Coughlin – and eliminated Larry Morgan (6.767 seconds to 6.820) in the first round and Warren Johnson (6.750 to 6.802) in the quarterfinals before encountering Greg Anderson.

Both drivers were ready. Connolly had a .012-second reaction to Anderson’s  .014. The cars stayed together the full 1320 feet and he edge went to  Anderson’s 6.740 to Connolly’s 6.746. The winning margin was four-thousandths of  a second.

“Greg is driving well. I thought we had the horsepower to beat him,” Connolly said. “We made six awesome runs in a row,” including his final two qualifying attempts. “Overall, we had another semifinal finish (his third in five races). We are looking forward to going Atlanta (April 27-29). We have confidence we can run good any where in any kind of conditions.”

Connolly remained third in NHRA POWERade Series points with 329, but he’s only 26 out of third place.
