Jerry Toliver Canidae Pet Foods Chevy

Topeka, Saturday: Jerry Toliver and the Rockstar Energy Drink Toyota Funny Car team got off to a good start Friday in the first round of qualifying and it carried into Saturday when he qualified 12th for Sunday's O'Reilly Summer Nationals at Heartland Park Topeka.

And, he says, his master plan is working. "Qualifying is step one and going rounds Sunday is the next step. That's the master plan." So far, so good.

With wily tuning legend Dale Armstrong at the controls, Toliver surprised virtually everyone by posting his quickest time of the weekend (4.903 seconds at 317.05 mph) on his opening attempt Friday following a long rain delay.  And it held up.  He races Tim Wilkerson (No. 5, 4.832 at 325.85) Sunday in the first round.

"It sounds easy . . . go rounds.  OK, we can do that," Toliver added with a laugh.  "The interesting thing is we got down the track on our first lap in the worst conditions and we wound up 12th.
