Sampey departs in semifinals

Chicago, Sunday: U.S. Army Suzuki pilot Angelle Sampey lost in the semifinals here Sunday in the Torco Racing Fuels Route 66 Nationals at Route 66 Raceway.

Sampey, who is a three-time NHRA POWERade world champion, had the better elapsed time in her semifinal round race with Andrew Hines (6.983-seconds to 7.005- seconds), but she left the starting line later than Hines (.088-seconds to .027-seconds) and it ultimately cost her.

"Obviously, this loss is on me," she offered. "I guess I was afraid of red lighting and held back way too much. I feel like I let the team down and, of course, our soldiers as well. We had a real good opportunity to win here today."

Despite not capturing her second win of the year, the Louisiana native can take solace in the fact that she moved up a spot in the standings to second-place behind leader Matt Smith.
