Doug Kalitta Mac Tools dragster

Englishtown, Sunday: Doug Kalitta advanced his Kalitta Motorsports Top Fuel dragster to a quarterfinal appearance during final eliminations at the ProCare Rx NHRA SuperNationals at historic Old Bridge Township Raceway Park in Englishtown, N.J., Sunday.

Kalitta, who qualified No. 14 in the 16-car eliminations field, matched up against the No. 3 qualifier Clay Millican as Top Fuel eliminations began Sunday morning. On paper, the round was Millican’s to win, but Kalitta and his Mac Tools team defied the odds and put Millican’s car in the trailer with a convincing upset win, 4.655 seconds, 325.37 mph to 5.066 sec., 254.09 mph.

In the quarterfinals, Kalitta faced off against Larry Dixon. The two venerable nitro vets have 68 combined Top Fuel title trophies between them both. Kalitta got away from the starting line first (.056 sec. to .085 sec.), but then his Mac Tools rail started losing valuable traction on the hot and slippery drag strip at Old Bridge Township Raceway Park around 400 feet down the quarter-mile and that let Dixon get around him for the win, 5.227 sec., 217.25 mph to 4.669 sec., 313.80 mph.

Kalitta dropped from 12th to 13th in POWERade championship points.
