Millican qualifies 12th in first visit to Denver

Denver, Saturday: Clay Millican's first run in mile-high altitude was his quickest, and the 4.714-second time at 294.31 mph put him 12th going into Sunday's Mopar Mile-High Nationals at Bandimere Speedway.

Millican squares off against Tony Schumacher (No. 5, 4.630 at 310.55 mph) in the opening round.

"We got down the race track twice and Mike (Kloeber, crew chief) was trying to get the motor to run on eight cylinders," said Millican.  "He finally did on our last run and the car did a nice wheelie right away. I don't know if the car got up on the wheelie bar, but it smoked the tires.

"Weather conditions cooled off quite a bit for the last run. I wish we'd been able to go a little further down the track . . . like 1320 feet.

"I think we'll be OK Sunday because it is probably going to be hot again and the track will be tricky."
