Schumacher third after day one

Sonoma, Friday: U.S. Army Top Fuel driver, Tony "The Sarge" Schumacher, jumped into the third starting position following the first day of qualifying here Friday for the FRAM-Autolite Nationals at Infineon Raceway.

Schumacher laid down a 4.575-second pass at 324.90 mph in session number one which ultimately landed him in the third slot. He didn't get a chance to make a second run as the evening Top Fuel session was shortened due to the track's curfew of 10 p.m.

"We were number one after the first session but, unfortunately , we didn't get an opportunity to run at night and got bumped down to third," said the defending NHRA POWERade Top Fuel world champion. "We're fine just the same. Since we were in Denver a couple of weeks ago, we've been getting down the track fairly consistently. That's very encouraging."

The Chicago native is coming off his third win of the year at Seattle last weekend. He'd like to add to that total come Sunday while banking his first career victory in Wine Country.

"I've never won out here, so it'd be nice to break the ice this year," he added. "The big thing here in Sonoma is for the U.S. Army team to keep running strong as we inch closer to the start of the Countdown to the Championship."
