Sampey swipes No. 1 spot

Sonoma, Saturday:  U.S. Army Suzuki pilot Angelle Sampey grabbed the number one starting spot here Saturday during final qualifying for tomorrow's FRAM-Autolite Nationals at Infineon Raceway.

The Louisiana native posted an ultra quick 6.924-second pass at 193.40 mph in qualifying session number four to jump up to the top position for race day.

Sampey, who recorded her fourth pole of the year and the 43rd of her career, was one surprised rider when her elapsed time was revealed at the top end of the track.

"I couldn't believe it to be honest," said the three-time world champion. "I pretty much fish-tailed the whole way down the track and figured this was sort of a throw away run. Obviously, I was dead wrong.

"You have to tip your hat to Steve Tartaglia (her crew chief) and the entire U.S. Army team. They're continually working to make our Suzukis better. This was an example of that tireless effort."

Sampey will take on 16th-place qualifier, Shawn Gann, in the opening round of eliminations.
