Antron Brown Matco Tools dragster

Reading, Saturday: Antron Brown ended qualifying action in the eighth position. Despite improving with each qualifying pass, Brown still had to settle for eighth-place in the final order. It's the first time he's qualified in the top half of the field in fiveraces.

"We actually went sub-seven seconds in the final session (6.997-seconds) which was a nice change," he offered. "If we can continue to put up even better numbers tomorrow, I feel confident that we can challenge for the win. We're certainly hungry for that first victory of the year."

Brown, who will face ninth-place qualifier Steve Johnson in Sunday's first round, is still holding out hope that he can sneak into the top eight in points, while clinching a berth in the Countdown to the Championship.

"We need a lot of help for that to happen, but you never know," he said. "We can only control our own business."
