Johnson goes to semis, moves to third in points

Dallas, Sunday: Allen Johnson had a pretty good day today at the O'Reilly NHRA Fall Nationals at the Texas Motorplex. He powered the Mopar/J&J Racing Dodge Stratus into the semifinal round after defeating Jim Yates and Justin Humphreys, and moved up into third in the Countdown to Four point standings.

Johnson knew that he had to ratchet it up for his semifinal round match-up against three-time Pro Stock champion Greg Anderson. And he did. His near-perfect reaction time of .004 of a second (.000 is perfect) gave him the edge over Anderson's .032, but Anderson chased him down, taking the victory by .0236 of a second with a 6.689-second pass at 206.48 mph to Johnson's valiant but losing 6.740/205.60.

"We had a good weekend," said Johnson. "We did what we needed to do, but we needed a break there against Greg; he's running really strong. I was able to do my job, just didn't get the break.

"But we'll go to Richmond with maybe a little bit of a cushion to stay in the Countdown. If we can just go up there and win a round, maybe we can still stay in it. We're happy.

"We weren't really stout all day today; just off a little bit. We'll take it. We'll just go to Richmond and if we qualify in the top half and win a round we think we might have a shot of staying in. That's our goal.

"I had a pretty good light against Greg there in the final, a .004, but it just wasn't enough. He needed to stumble just a little bit."
