Schumacher sprints to No. 1 spot

Las Vegas, Friday: U.S. Army Top Fuel driver, Tony "The Sarge" Schumacher, took the number one starting position here Friday following the opening day of qualifying for the ACDelco Las Vegas Nationals at The Strip at Las Vegas Motor Speedway.

Schumacher, who came into the race weekend third in the NHRA's Countdown to One standings, posted a 4.482-second pass at 327.59 mph in the second round of action to claim the provisional pole.

Schumacher would like nothing better than to duplicate his 2006 fall performance at The Strip in the seventh annual ACDelco Las Vegas Nationals.

"The win here in Vegas last year was definitely the stimulus for our winning another world championship," he said. "We'll need a similar type of outing this time around so we can get to Pomona (Calif.) next weekend in a good position to contend for the title."

Consistency will be critical if Schumacher is to win an unprecedented fourth consecutive POWERade trophy.

"We have to get down the track every time," he added. "You can't make any mistakes at this point in the season. One mistake could be a real killer."
