Tony Schumacher U.S. Army dragster

Pomona, Thursday:  Tony "The Sarge" Schumacher, aboard his U.S. Army Top Fuel dragster, grabbed the sixth starting position here Thursday after the first day of qualifying for the Auto Club Finals at Auto Club Raceway. The Chicago native recorded a 4.544-second pass at 323.04 mph during the only qualifying session of the day.

Coming into the season finale holding fourth-place in the NHRA's Countdown to One standings, Schumacher is trying to pocket as many points as he can in qualifying so he can have a shot at his fourth straight world championship come race day.

"We definitely need every point that we can get right now," he said. "We know that we have a real battle on our hands this weekend, but we're up for it. My team is as good as they come."

Schumacher entered the last race of 2007 trailing leader, Rod Fuller, by 67 points. Sandwiched in between Fuller and Schumacher is Larry Dixon and Brandon Bernstein.

"That's the cream of the crop," he added. "If we get the title on Sunday, we will have beaten some great drivers and teams."
