WJ goes back to basics, powers to the third starting spot

Pomona, Saturday: Qualifying for the final race of the 2007 POWERade Drag Racing season came to a close on Saturday at the Auto Club Raceway at Pomona, and GM Performance Parts GTO racer Warren Johnson took full advantage of the opportunity.  In his third attempt on Saturday morning, The Professor rocketed down the quarter-mile in 6.655-seconds with a top speed of 208.49 mph to claim the third starting spot for Sunday’s final eliminations of the Auto Club Finals in Pomona, California.  As the six-time Pro Stock champion explained, it was simply a matter of his race team going back to what they knew.

“Although we’re never completely satisfied unless we’re No. 1, we’ll certainly take that run.  This is the same engine and same GM Performance Parts GTO that we’ve run all season, but up until the last two races, we had been fighting two battles, trying to tune the engine to a chassis configuration that I really didn’t know that much about. Unfortunately, it wasn’t producing consistent results, making it extremely difficult to effectively tune the engine.

“However, we’ve now gone back to square one, using our chassis set-up from 2003-2006.  In fact, this is the same engine we used in 2005, albeit with different manifolds, camshafts and so forth.  Now that the car is going down the racetrack on every run, I can be more precise with the engine tune-up, and the results are starting to show on the racetrack.  Armed with the information from today’s runs, we’re going to do what we can to go for the throat tomorrow.”
