Brown races to No. 4 spot
Gainesville, Saturday: A decade ago, Antron Brown made his professional drag racing debut at Gainesville Raceway on his Suzuki Pro Stock Motorcycle. Now the recently-turned 32-year-old is driving the Matco Tools dragster at a track he’s quite accustomed to. Saturday afternoon, Brown qualified his Matco Tools dragster fourth at the 39th running of the ACDelco NHRA Gatornationals with a time of 4.558 seconds. After the opening day of qualifying was washed away for the second straight race, Brown and the Lee Beard-led Matco team had just two qualifying attempts to make the 16-car field with 21 cars attempting to make the Gatornationals. Brown used a Beard tune-up to power the Matco-backed dragster to the provisional No. 3 position with a pass of 4.640 seconds at 317.64 mph. The 16-time NHRA winner, who earned the Gatornationals PSM pole in 2001, then upped the performance by powering the blue Matco Tools dragster to a run of 4.558 at 327.51 mph to finish fourth in the Top Fuel order. Brown has now qualified first, fifth, and fourth this season. “We made two good runs and qualified in the top five,” Brown said. “I couldn’t be more pleased on how our team keeps stepping up.
