Fuller aims to improve

Houston, Friday: Rod Fuller and the David Powers-owned Mustang Cat Top Fuel team will look to improve after racing to the 17th quickest time of the day Friday evening at Houston Raceway Park.

Fuller, who earned his first career Top Fuel round win at the Baytown track in 2005, used a conservative tune-up from crew chief Rob Flynn to power the Mustang Cat dragster to a pass of 4.861 seconds at 319.98. That positioned the Caterpillar-backed rail eighth in the order. Fuller’s Mustang Cat/Direct Energy dragster dropped a cylinder at the hit of the throttle on Friday's second attempt and the six-time NHRA winner was forced to lift early and coasted to a time of 5.228 at 192.17. Fuller sits 17th in the order with two qualifying sessions remaining. He qualified third last March at Houston with a run of 4.533 seconds.

“For some reason we just struggled with the tune-up today,” Fuller said. “We dropped a hole (cylinder) at the hit on both runs. I had to lift on the second run because it was getting close to the center line. This is unfamiliar territory for us, but we’ll get it fixed tomorrow and get this Mustang Cat car in the show for Sunday.”
