WJ will start ninth
Atlanta, Saturday: Fine-tuning their set-up on every run, Warren Johnson and the GM Performance Parts Pontiac GXP Racing team completed a solid qualifying effort on Saturday at the Summit Racing Equipment Southern Nationals, with their 6.673-second, 207.98 mph pass from Friday evening earning the ninth starting position for Sunday’s final eliminations. Although Saturday’s higher temperatures prevented any changes in the top half of the field, Johnson continued to work on his tune-up, and in the heat of the afternoon posted the quickest time and fastest speed of the 27 cars making an attempt in the final session at Atlanta Dragway, stopping the quarter-mile clocks in 6.678-seconds at 207.43 mph. “We’re gaining on it steadily. We’ve been changing parts on this GM Performance Parts GXP trying to see if they make a difference or not, and in this last session we finally achieved some positive results. I’m not saying it’s the final answer, but at least it has given us a direction to head in, which really is all we were looking for. “This last change came to us as a result of our testing in “It’s going to take some time to completely fix it, as we’ll have to do some testing, but we moved in the right direction on the performance chart. For tomorrow, we’ll make an incremental change and let ‘er rip, seeing what we can to go some rounds.”
