Weis qualifies for fastest field in NHRA history

Pomona, Saturday: The tension was crushing as the working man’s team sat outside looking in. Not once had they been able to go down the track. The fact they were in good company provided them no solace. They didn’t want to be one of the many teams heading home early. This was their last chance to put their driver in the show. Weis and his crew rose to the occasion, blasting their way into the quickest field in NHRA history, laying down a stout 4.58 at 310 mph.

“We’ve got to quit doing this, it’s killing me,” said Weis with a grin from ear to ear. “We brought on six new sponsors this season Barrett Enterprises, the Chicago Regional Council of Carpenters, Industrial Ladder a multi-state contractor supply chain, Werner Ladder, Bosch, and Bilt-Jax scaffolding. You surely don’t want to start your relationship with them on a poor note.

"It was looking ugly going into the final session of qualifying. We didn’t get down at all on our other two attempts the car kept putting holes out, but my guys dug down and made it happen. When you don’t get down twice and then are faced with getting into the quickest field ever, nerve racking doesn’t come close to describing it. I hate having to qualify on the last shot but we’re in now so, it’s back to work. We’ve got a lot of to do tonight to get ready to run Scott Kalitta tomorrow, but we’ll be ready."
